Protect Your Feet This Summer

At Pasco-Hernando Foot & Ankle, we know each season brings unique challenges for your feet. Soaring temperatures and summertime activities require some special care to help keep your ankles and feet healthy. Below are some tips to consider:

  • Don’t feel the burn. While our Nature Coast patients are aware of the effects of the blistering hot Florida sun, its harmful rays can still sneak up on you in unexpected times and places. Everyone knows the importance of sunscreen when at the beach or pool, but what about a day of shopping or running errands? If you’re going to be outside and the skin on your feet is exposed, be sure to apply sunscreen before you head out. It’s also important to prevent burns from hot pavement and sand by avoiding walking barefoot during the heat of the day.

  • Ramp up the moisturizer. Open summer shoe styles and hot temperatures can dry your skin out faster than usual. To prevent flaky skin on your feet or heel cracks, be sure to apply a rich moisturizing lotion to your feet every night. Need a little intensive moisture action? Smooth on a layer of petroleum jelly on very dry areas and wrap in plastic wrap overnight. You’ll wake up with baby soft skin!

  • Avoid sports injuries. The nicer weather increases the incentive for being active. Always wear shoes that are appropriate for the sport or fitness activity you’re doing. Increase the intensity and length of your workout gradually to avoid tendonitis and muscle strains. Don’t forget to do the appropriate warmups, stretches, and cooldowns.

  • Limit barefoot time. It is particularly important if you have diabetes. Walking barefoot increases your risk for cuts, puncture wounds, and fungal infections—all of which may be more difficult to detect if neuropathy has reduced the sensation in your feet.

We hope all our patients are enjoying summer fun! If you have a foot injury or concern, contact our Hudson office (727-868-2128 or 352-683-5799), and our podiatrist, Dr. Lawrence J. Kales, will diagnose and treat your podiatric condition promptly.
