8 Tips for Diabetic Foot Care

This disease can cause several conditions which have a detrimental effect on the health of your feet. They include: neuropathy, peripheral vascular disease and foot deformities. Fortunately, there are many ways that diabetic patients can protect their feet. Below are eight tips for preventing complications.
Manage your blood glucose levels. Work with your physician to manage your diabetes. Diet, exercise and medication all play a role in maintaining appropriate levels. If your diabetes is under control you are less likely to suffer complications.
Examine your feet daily. Look over your entire foot (or ask someone to do for you) and pay attention to any changes or unusual symptoms. Report swelling, redness, rashes, lumps, changes in skin or nails to our podiatrist, Dr. Lawrence J. Kales promptly and head foot problems off at the pass.
Wash feet every day. This will help you avoid foot infections like athlete’s foot and toenail fungus.
Choose shoes wisely. Look for ones that are made out of soft, breathable material and have roomy toe boxes. Shoes that are too tight can cut off circulation and cause deformities like bunions and hammertoes.
Take care of toenails. Nails should be trimmed straight across. Do not cut too short or round the edges as this may lead to ingrown toenails.
Get the blood flowing. Good circulation is very important for health and healing in your feet. Don’t stay in one position for a long period of time. Avoid sitting cross-legged and flex your toes and feet throughout the day.
Exercise regularly. This too will boost circulation and also help you maintain a healthy weight and lower blood sugar levels.
Keep feet covered. Whether you’re out or at home wear shoes to prevent cuts and puncture wounds from stepping on sharp objects. When you’re at a public pool, gym or beach restroom use shower shoes or flip flops—fungal infections are spread by direct contact.
