Avoid these Summer Vacation Foot Spoilers

Whether you’re planning big travels this summer or enjoying day trips close by, we at Pasco-Hernando Foot & Ankle want to ensure that your feet stay safe and healthy. A foot problem can quickly result in a detour to the sidelines. Take precautions to prevent these seasonal issues:

Sunburn

We see plenty of sunshine on the Nature Coast year-round, but it's most intense during the summer. Use a water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. If you're wearing sandals and open shoes, make applying sunscreen to your feet and ankles part of your morning routine. Even sitting on the deck or running a few errands is enough time for sun damage to occur. You'll have to reapply at the beach or pool after swimming or every two hours, whichever comes first.

Blisters

Perspiration on your feet increases friction, and that equals blisters. Skin that is rubbing up against footwear can cause a blister to form fast. Keep some self-adhesive moleskin with you in your bag or purse, and put a piece on any area of your foot as soon as you notice the irritation. If you have neuropathy, look for red spots on your feet when you take your shoes off, which may indicate footwear friction.

Swelling

It may be hard to prevent foot and ankle swelling in the heat completely, but you can minimize it by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. If you're traveling by plane or have a long car trip, consider compression stockings which can help decrease swelling and improve circulation.

Injuries

When traveling, be sure to pack the proper footwear for your adventures. Bring athletic shoes or sneakers if any physical activities such as hiking or tennis are on the itinerary. Walking shoes are a must for tours and shopping excursions.

Infections

Many common foot infections, such as athlete's foottoenail fungus, and warts, are transmitted by direct contact. Although it's tempting to go barefoot in the summer, keep your feet covered to avoid picking up one of these infections. Wearing shoes will also prevent cuts and puncture wounds.

We wish all our patients wonderful vacations, but if you sustain an injury or come home with any unusual foot symptoms, contact our Hudson office at 727-868-2128 or 352-683-5799 for an appointment with our podiatrist, Dr. Lawrence J. Kales, to have your feet examined and to determine the appropriate treatment.
