Do’s and Don’ts for Buying Children New Shoes
It's that time of year--parents and grandparents are busy purchasing children’s back to school gear, and at Pasco-Hernando Foot & Ankle Care, we want to offer some suggestions about choosing new school shoes. Buying good-quality shoes that fit correctly is an investment in the health of your child's developing feet. Below are some do's and don'ts to consider when shopping.
Do: Consult with our podiatrist, Dr. Lawrence J. Kales, if your child has any chronic podiatric conditions such as heel pain or if they have recently suffered a foot or ankle injury. The foot doctor will want to check the current condition of your child’s feet and may make recommendations about the best type of shoe for their feet. You can make an appointment at our Hudson office by calling: 727-868-2128 or 352-683-5799.
Do: Shop at the end of the day. That’s when feet are most swollen. It will help ensure the shoes you buy your child don’t start to feel tight as the day goes on.
Don’t: Order shoes online. While adults who have previously purchased a particular shoe in their size may be able to order the exact pair online confidently, children's feet grow and change too rapidly. The only way to guarantee the proper fit is by going to a store and trying on both shoes.
Do: Get your child’s feet professionally measured. It will determine how much your child's feet have grown and give you their current size. Do be aware, however, different manufacturers may cut shoes smaller or larger. Always go by fit, not strictly by size.
Don’t: forget to bring the right socks. It's always best to try shoes on with the same socks your child will wear with them. It will provide a more accurate fit.
Don’t: choose fads over function. Purchase shoes made of breathable materials (avoid vinyl or plastic). Look for good arch support, a firm heel counter, and cushioned insole.
Do: make sure toes have wiggle room. There should be a thumb’s width of space between your child’s longest toe and the front of the shoe, and they should be able to move all their toes freely inside the shoes you’re buying.
Don’t: be tempted to buy shoes a size larger to extend wear time. These will not be comfortable, and your child will most likely end up with blisters or an injury from tripping and falling or twisting an ankle from wearing shoes that are too big.
