Below are steps you can take to protect yourself and decrease your chances of falling.

  • Don’t ignore foot pain. One of the reasons we know so much about fall risk is that foot and ankle pain is one of the primary causes of falling.   • Get your eyes examined annually. A decrease in vision may occur gradually. Sticking with your annual appointment and updating your eyeglass prescription as needed is an important fall preventer.

  • Do a med check. Ask your pharmacist or physician to look at all the medications you are taking and determine if any potential interactions may cause dizziness or lightheadedness. It’s always a good idea to ensure all your doctors know what other physicians have prescribed for you. Be sure to list all vitamins, supplements, and over-the-counter medications you take as well.

  • Replace worn-out shoes. There comes a time when your comfy shoes become stretched out to the point where they turn into a tripping hazard. Worn down or unevenly worn treads or damaged shoes can more easily catch on carpeting and cause you to stumble.

  • Discuss fall fears with your family and your foot doctor. Many older people are afraid to voice their concerns about falling because they think their family will begin to restrict their freedom or they will have to resort to using a cane or other assistive device. In reality, this is an important way to be proactive and get any help you need making changes and choices that can stop you from falling.
