Trick or Treat, Smell My Feet?

This old-time Halloween rhyme may bring a nostalgic smile, but at Pasco-Hernando Foot & Ankle, we know that foot odor is no laughing matter. This embarrassing problem, however, can be alleviated. Foot odor is often the result of sweaty feet. Naturally occurring bacteria on your skin when mixed with sweat can produce a bad smell. In some cases, fungal infections are the cause of foot odor. If you suffer with this problem, make an appointment at our Spring Hill (352 683-5799) or Hudson (727-868-2128) office so that our podiatrist, Dr. Lawrence J. Kales, can examine your feet and prescribe the correct treatment. It may be something as simple as better hygiene practices and a black tea or vinegar soak to get rid of foot odor. In some cases, other more sophisticated treatments may be necessary.

Keeping Foot Odor in Check

There are several steps you can take to prevent foot odor and fungal infections. These include:

  • Getting in the habit of washing your feet daily with soap and warm water.

  • Keep feet dry. If your feet tend to sweat, keep an extra pair of socks on hand and change them as soon as you notice that your feet feel damp.

  • Use a foot powder each day to help keep feet dry.

  • Don’t share shoes, socks, flip-flops, nail clippers or anything else that touches someone else’s feet.

  • Choose footwear that is made of breathable material and are roomy enough to allow for good air circulation. Avoid tight socks or stockings and styles that trap moisture in your shoes and socks.

  • Rotate your shoes. Don’t wear the same pair every day. Give shoes a chance to air out.

  • Avoid walking barefoot in public places such as gym locker rooms and showers, sports clubs, nails salons and dance studios. Fungal infections are spread by direct contact.
