5 Tips for Senior Foot Care
Did you know 75% of people will experience problems with their feet at one time or another during their lives? At Pasco-Hernando Foot & Ankle, we know the risk for many foot disorders increases as you age. It doesn't mean, however, that foot pain is inevitable. There are plenty of ways you can protect the health of your feet and continue to lead the active life you love.
5 suggestions for seniors to improve foot health
Examine your feet daily—one way to minimize foot trouble is by catching any problems in the very early stages. Getting in the habit of checking your feet every day means you’ll be able to spot changes immediately. Lumps, bruising, cuts that don’t seem to be healing, rashes, swelling—these are all symptoms that should be reported promptly to our podiatrist, Dr. Lawrence J. Kales.
Keep the blood flowing—good circulation is vital to the health of your feet. Stay active and avoid long periods of sitting with your legs crossed or standing. Change position frequently. Elevate your feet when you are sitting and massage them regularly. Don’t smoke—it decreases circulation.
Practice good podiatric care—keep feet clean and dry. Don't allow them to stay in damp socks. It can encourage fungal infections. Use an antiperspirant or foot powder if your feet tend to sweat during the day. Apply a rich moisturizer at night before bed to prevent dry skin and cracked heels.
Take care of toenails—trim nails straight across to prevent ingrown toenails. Smooth rough edges to prevent snags and tears but don’t round the edges of the nails.
Wear good-quality shoes—be sure they are supportive and have non-slip treads. Replace shoes when they are worn. If the podiatrist has prescribed an orthotic, make sure it fits into the new shoes you buy.
Be aware that unusual symptoms in your feet may also signal serious systemic health issues such as diabetes, nerve problems, or arthritis, making it all the more important to get them checked out by contacting our Hudson office by calling 727-868-2128 or 352-683-5799.
