Tips for Improving Foot Health
At Pasco Hernando Foot & Ankle, we want to encourage our Nature Coast patients to be proactive in the health of their feet. Many podiatric conditions can be avoided or at least relieved by practicing good foot care when feet are at their best to keep them that way. Below are some ways to protect the health of your feet and ankles and reduce the risk of foot pain.
Buy new shoes—okay, we’re not suggesting you replace your entire footwear wardrobe, but it is a good idea to inspect your shoes periodically. Look for worn-down soles, stretched-out heal counters, loose stitching, and hole signs of wear. Keeping shoes beyond their natural lifespan increases the risk of injury and developing foot problems. When buying new shoes, choose ones that are well-make (preferably of a flexible material) and supportive. Get your feet professionally measured and ensure shoes fit correctly for maximum health benefits.
Get balanced—did you know that one out of three people over 65 have a balance problem? Tai chi and certain types of yoga can be beneficial in improving your body’s balance mechanisms. It dramatically increases the risk of a fall. You can also work on balance throughout your day while doing simple tasks like brushing your teeth or cooking—practice standing on one leg for 10 to 20 seconds at a time.
Decrease high-impact exercise—if your exercise regimen consists of only running, racquetball, or other high-impact exercises, you may be increasing your risk for an injury or chronic condition such as plantar fasciitis. Vary your routine by alternating high-impact exercise with one easier on the feet, such as swimming or cycling. Build rest days into your workout schedule.
Get foot trouble checked sooner rather than later—many common foot problems are progressive, meaning they will worsen over time. Many conservative treatments are available for podiatric disorders, but they are most effective when utilized in the early stages of a condition.
