Take a Walk!
Are you one of our Nature Coast patients that have been less than active throughout the pandemic? If you answered “yes,” we at Pasco-Hernando Foot & Ankle want you to know you are not alone. An excellent way to start working your way back to a higher level of physical fitness is simply by walking. Below are some tips to get you started.
Get the Foot Doctor Okay
If you have a chronic foot problem such as bunions or Achilles tendonitis, or it’s just been a while since you’ve been to our Hudson office (727-868-2128 or 352-683-5799), make an appointment for a podiatric checkup with our podiatrist, Dr. Lawrence J. Kales. The foot doctor will want to evaluate the current condition of your feet and ankles.
Check Out Your Walking Shoes
One of the plusses about walking is that it doesn’t require any expensive equipment. However, a good pair of walking shoes is essential for your comfort and the health of your feet. If you have walking shoes already, inspect them for signs of wear and try them on to make sure they still fit correctly. Your shoe size can change as you age. If you believe your shoes have already walked more than 300 miles, it’s probably best to get a new pair as the internal cushioning and shock absorption get worn down over time.
If you need to get new walking shoes, here are some helpful tips:
Ask the podiatrist for recommendations about styles and features that will be good for your feet. The foot doctor can analyze your gait and make suggestions for features that will accommodate any foot problems you have. In some cases, the doctor might prescribe a custom orthotic device to make walking more comfortable.
Visit an athletic shoe store. Fitness footwear stores usually have trained staff that can help you pick the right shoe for your foot. Many sports shoe stores even have treadmills for you to try out the shoes and help the salespeople steer you toward a good choice. You will also get professionally measured and fit.
Shop prepared. If you do have an orthotic, bring it with you to try on with the shoes. Wear the same type of sock you plan to wear when walking. It’s best to choose a sock that will wick perspiration away from your skin to reduce the risk of blisters.
Take your time. Try on both shoes and walk around the store for a while. There’s no such thing as breaking in, period. Shoes should fit comfortably and adequately from the outset.
Now you’re ready to go! Start with just a short walk each day or every other day and gradually increase the time and distance you walk. If you experience any foot or ankle pain, contact us promptly.
